I can remember as a little girl my Granny Ann always had a buckeye. She told me they were good luck. It has
become a yearly event for Isaac and me to go "buckeye hunting." This year we had a little help. We found bunches ... enough for us to share with Nana.

Isaac did a little reading about buckeys. Here's what he learned...

The name "Buckeye" came from the Native Americans who noticed that the glossy,
Chestut-Brown seeds with the lighter circular "eye" looked very similar to the eye of
a buck.
The nuts are slightly poisonous and shouldn't be eaten unless they are heated and
leached.

The nut is a glossy brown color and very smooth. The nuts are contained in a hull
until they ripen in September. The hull opens and they fall to the ground. Many
times there are
multipile nuts in a hull.
