Thunderhead

View of Thunderhead

View looking from Thunderhead

Thunderhead is a summit in Blount County. Its elevation is 5,535 feet. The nearest city is Townsend which is six miles away.
"No one knows for sure how Thunderhead got its name. Perhaps it was due to its resemblance to a thundercloud or a thunderhead. Maybe it was named for the numerous lightning strikes that occur along its crest. Cherokees called it 'Atagahi' meaning (oak) gall place, for the presence of many oak galls there." We are reading Autumn Winifred Oliver Does Things Different. She lived in Cades Cove in 1934 when the National Park was being created. (okay...she's not really real!) When she made reference to Thunderhead, Mom make me look it up!
